Na hodnotách záleží: Naše stanovisko k vyřazení Derricka Maye z programu

Vážení návštěvníci, přátelé, naše komunito,

když jsme pro letošní ročník Hell Yes! připravovali line-up, naším prvořadým cílem bylo přivézt vám umělce, kteří zásadním způsobem formovali historii elektronické hudby. S tímto vědomím a čistým nadšením jsme do programu zařadili i Derricka Maye.

V uplynulých dnech se však k nám i k vám dostaly informace o jeho opakovaných vystoupeních v Rusku v průběhu trvajícího válečného konfliktu na Ukrajině, a to na akcích spojených se strukturami tamního autoritářského režimu.

Po hluboké vnitřní diskuzi a ověření všech faktů jsme se jako tým rozhodli zrušit vystoupení Derricka Maye na letošním ročníku Hell Yes! Festivalu.

Tento krok pro nás není jednoduchý. Znamená pro nás nejen citelnou programovou ztrátu, ale také ztrátu finanční, neboť podstatná část nákladů spojených s tímto bookingem již byla uhrazena. Jsme však přesvědčeni, že existují momenty, kdy obchodní zájmy a umělecká prestiž musí ustoupit základní lidské odpovědnosti.

Náš hudební dramaturg Tris Kayo k situaci uvádí:

„Jako tým jsme se rozhodli vyřadit Derricka Maye z našeho line-upu. Do tohoto bookingu jsme vstupovali s nadšením, otevřenou myslí a zaměřením na hudební přínos umělce. Protože však takové situaci čelíme poprvé, učili jsme se za pochodu a pozorně naslouchali obavám naší komunity. Nedávno zveřejněné informace v nás vyvolaly vážné znepokojení. Na festivalu Hell Yes! nepodporujeme ani neschvalujeme žádnou formu špatného zacházení, zneužívání nebo ubližování druhým. To se vztahuje i na podporu systémů nebo režimů, které takové bezpráví umožňují. Stojíme v solidaritě s těmi, kteří čelí útlaku a nespravedlnosti po celém světě.“

Kultura a umění nemohou existovat ve vakuu, izolované od reality lidského utrpení. Účast na akcích, které přímo či nepřímo legitimizují agresi, je v rozporu s principy svobody, tolerance a lidskosti, na kterých náš festival stavíme. Velmi si v tomto kontextu vážíme konzistentních postojů umělců – jako je například ukrajinská DJka Nastia – kteří se nebojí situaci pojmenovat pravými jmény.

Vážíme si vaší trpělivosti, zpětné vazby a dialogu, který s námi vedete. Naším závazkem zůstává tvořit bezpečné prostředí, kde hudba zůstává svobodná, ale neztrácí svědomí.

Values Matter: Our Statement on Removing Derrick May from the Lineup

Music has the power to unite people, but it cannot ignore the world around us. We bring you an important and honest statement regarding an adjustment to this year's Hell Yes! Festival program.

Dear festival-goers, friends, our community,

When we were putting together the lineup for this year's Hell Yes!, our primary goal was to bring you artists who have fundamentally shaped the history of electronic music. With this in mind and pure enthusiasm, we included Derrick May in our program.

Over the past few days, however, information has come to light—shared with both us and you—regarding his repeated performances in Russia during the ongoing war in Ukraine, specifically at events linked to the structures of the local authoritarian regime.

Following a deep internal discussion and verification of all facts, we as a team have decided to cancel Derrick May's performance at this year's Hell Yes! Festival.

This step is not an easy one for us. It represents not only a significant programming loss but also a financial one, as a substantial portion of the costs associated with this booking has already been paid. However, we are convinced that there are moments when commercial interests and artistic prestige must give way to basic human responsibility.

Our music programmer, Tris Kayo, states the following regarding the situation:

"As a team, we have made the decision to remove Derrick May from our lineup. We entered into this booking with excitement, an open mind, and a focus on the musical contribution of an artist whose influence on electronic music is widely recognised. As this is the first time we have faced a situation of this nature, we have been learning as we go and listening carefully to the concerns raised by our community. Recent information has come to light that has left us feeling uncomfortable and has prompted serious reflection. We recognise that this is a sensitive matter and that decisions like these are rarely as straightforward as we might hope. At Hell Yes!, we do not support or condone any form of mistreatment, misconduct, abuse, or harm towards others. This extends to supporting systems, institutions, or regimes that enable, propagate, or inflict such harm. We stand in solidarity with those who face oppression and injustice around the world."

Culture and art cannot exist in a vacuum, isolated from the reality of human suffering. Participating in events that directly or indirectly legitimize aggression stands in direct contradiction to the principles of freedom, tolerance, and humanity upon which our festival is built. In this context, we deeply respect the consistent stances of artists—such as Ukrainian DJ Nastia—who are not afraid to call things by their true names.

We appreciate your patience, feedback, and the ongoing dialogue you maintain with us. Our commitment remains to create a safe environment where music stays free but does not lose its conscience.
